From Nature to Culture: Hanji Making from the Bark of the Local Dak Namu

 
Around the world, the viability of living heritage relies on humans’ relationships with nature. Oftentimes, nature is deemed something to be conquered to accelerate the economic and tourism development. This action consequently contributes to the loss of local wisdom among the marginalized communities who harmoniously and sustainably live with and make use of nature. According to UENSCO, knowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe emphasizes the expressions and representations created by the communities through their interactions with their natural environment. Thus, the creation of some delicate craft needs to be contemplated beyond its final product but to look back on its relationship to naturally rooted material.

Asia-Pacific Living Heritage Lesson Plan Contest: Announcement of winners

 
Six among 24 exemplary lesson plans from 10 regional countries are to be supported with grants for piloting at schools in the months ahead. 31 October 2023, Bangkok — Six schools in Asia-Pacific will receive grants from UNESCO to pilot their exemplary lesson plans employing living heritage in this year's UNESCO Asia-Pacific Living Heritage Lesson Plan Contest. The regional expert’s panel for living heritage and education deliberated in October 2023, reviewing a total of 146 entries from 96 schools in 23 countries.

Call for Case Studies on Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage and Climate Actions from Asia-Pacific Region

 
UNESCO is inviting interested teams and individuals to submit case studies from Asia and the Pacific that illustrate the roles and risks of intangible cultural heritage in the context of climate change. This call is launched in the framework of UNESCO’s efforts to contribute to a holistic approach to heritage safeguarding and sustainable development under the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, including in the context of climate change. This initiative is furthermore in line with the Final Declaration of the UNESCO World Conference on Cultural Policies and Sustainable Development (MONDIACULT 2022), which commended the new impetus given to the role of culture for sustainable development, as a force for resilience, social inclusion and cohesion, environmental protection and sustainable and inclusive growth.

2023 Advisory Committee Meeting of ICHCAP

 
O n November 20th, ICHCAP held its Advisory Committee Meeting for the year 2023 at the Conference Room on the 2nd floor of the Jeonseungmaru at the National Intangible Heritage Center. This meeting involved a review of the center’s key activities in 2023 and the plans for the year 2024, in collaboration with international experts appointed in the fields of international cooperation, intangible heritage, policy, and promotion last year.
