2022 Silk Roads Living Heritage Network Committee Bureau Meeting

 
2022 Committee Bureau Meeting of the Silk Roads Living Heritage Network (SRLHN) took place on 23 October 2022 within the framework of the BOSPHORUS International Folk Dance and Music Festival (22-25 October) in Istanbul, Turkiye. The meeting was organised by the International Information and Networking Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region under the auspices of UNESCO (ICHCAP) with the support of the European Association of Folklore Festivals (EAFF), Traditional Arts Association in Turkiye, and in close cooperation with the International Institute for Central Asia Studies (IICAS) The meeting was attended by the coordinating bureau members from 9 countries (Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Republic of Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Turkiye, and Uzbekistan), and representatives from the partner organisations.

MOU Signed between ICHCAP and EAFF on safeguarding and promoting intangible cultural heritage in the Silk Road area

 
On 23 October 2022, the International Information and Networking Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region under the auspices of UNESCO (ICHCAP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the European Association of Folklore Festivals (EAFF) to closely cooperate in safeguarding and promoting intangible cultural heritage in Silk Roads area based on a mutual understanding. The signing ceremony was attended by Mr. Jisung Kim, Director-General of ICHCAP, and Mr. Kaloyan Nikolov, President of EAFF within the framework of the 2022 Silk Roads Living Heritage Network (SRLHN) Coordinating Bureau Meeting in Istanbul, Turkiye. The agreement focuses on the development of the ICH festival networks and joint activities for the protection of living heritage in the context of the Convention on the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO. To note, SRLHN admitted to its membership around 40 ICH festivals from 9 countries along the Silk Roads. Therefore, this MOU represents a meaningful step forward in reviving and further expanding the ICH festival network.

The Ministry of Information, culture, and Tourism (MICT) of Lao People’s Democratic Republic visited ICHCAP

 
T en Lao government officials from the Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism of Lao PDR (MICT), visited ICHCAP on 7 November 2022. The delegation included the Director of Foreign Cooperation Bureau and the Directors of the National Museum, and the National Library of Lao PDR. The visit was made as part of the ODA project between Lao PDR and the Asia Culture Center (ACC) to build a digital cultural resource management system of Laos PDR and strengthen its capacity to develop cultural content. MICT and ICHCAP discussed the current state of Lao DPR’s ICH safeguarding during this meeting and sought ideas for future cooperation. As part of its commitment for the success of the ODA project, which runs from August 2022 to August 2025, ICHCAP promised cooperation, including technical advice in the field of ICH.

Domestic Stakeholder Workshop on UNESCO’s 2003 Convention to be Held in Seoul

 
A workshop will be held in Seoul to examine the latest news and trends related to the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (hereinafter referred to as the 2003 Convention) and to discuss the current status and future of the ICH elements that has been listed. The workshop, hosted by the Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea and organized by ICHCAP (hereinafter referred to as the Center), will be held on November 16th at The Plaza Hotel in Seoul, under the theme of “Activities and Challenges after being inscribed as the UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.” The event is expected to be a gathering of key stakeholders in South Korea to examine the here and hereafter of 2003 Convention and the listed ICH elements.
