The first national conservation carpentry skills competition is open to craftspeople, especially carpenters and shop drafting technicians with experience working in conservation projects to compete for the trophy presented by Her Royal Highness the Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. It aims to identify and celebrate skilled workers in the field of architectural wood conservation and to provide a platform for knowledge exchange between experts and practitioners. Twenty-four candidates from six teams have been selected for the competition, which will take place at the Mrigadayavan Palace, Petchaburi Province, from 11 to 20 January 2021.

The National Conservation Carpentry Skill Competition is organized in partnership with Ministry of Culture and Siam Cement Group Foundation, as part of a multi-year project that aims to upskill conservation workers and artisans in architectural restoration, initiated in response to concerns raised by the World Heritage Committee about the quality of conservation at Ayutthaya since 2014.

In the past two years, the project has focused on reviving skills related to woodworking, including the development of conservation carpenters curricula and conservation manuals, capacity building and awareness raising. The project facilitated the first ever agreement between the Fine Arts Department and the Department of Skills Development, paving ways for a systematic and long-term cooperation to set up proper remuneration and recognition for skilled artisans.
