Dates Set for Seventh Session of the General Assembly

The Seventh Session of the General Assembly of the States Party to the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage will be held at UNESCO Headquarters (Room II) from 4 to 6 June 2018.

This session will focus on a number of important items for the future of the 2003 Convention, such as the overall results framework to monitor the implementation of the Convention and reforms to the periodic reporting system.

The General Assembly will renew half of the Committee members. Twelve new Members of the Intergovernmental Committee for 2018 to 2022 will also be elected. Seats are distributed among electoral groups in proportion to the number of States Party from each electoral group. According to the Secretariat’s calculations based on 177 States, Electoral Group I will have one vacant seat; Electoral Group II, two vacant seats; Electoral Group III, one vacant seat; Electoral Group IV, four vacant seats; Electoral group V(a), three vacant seats; and Electoral Group V(b), one vacant seat.

Currently, members of the Electoral Group IV are Afghanistan, India, Mongolia, Philippines and Korea. Among them, four member states including Korea, Afghanistan, India and Mongolia finished their terms from 2013 to 2017, and will leave the group after the election.

For detailed information on the election, please refer to the letter sent to Permanent Delegations of the States Party to the Convention by the Secretariat on 6 March 2018. States Party are invited to inform the Secretariat by 23 April 2018 whether they intend to stand for election to the Committee. The Secretariat will publish, by 4 May, the provisional list of candidate States Party.

The working documents will be made available on or before 4 May 2018 in six working languages of the Assembly.

All States Party and participants attending will be invited to register online in due course.
