Bishkek,the capital of Kyrgyzstan, hosted a sub-regional training workshop for facilitators for Central Asia from 19 to 23 June 2017. UNESCO organized the workshop in the framework of its capacity-building program for implementing the 2003 Convention and as a follow-up to a previous three-year capacity-building project that UNESCO had implemented in Central Asia.

The workshop brought together the Secretariat of the Convention from UNESCO Headquarters, UNESCO culture specialists from the Field Offices in Tashkent and Almaty, and a group of twenty trainees from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan. It equipped the participants with the necessary knowledge and methodologies to conduct training workshops on implementing the Convention in Central Asia.

The workshop provided ideas on implementing capacity-building training in Central Asia, introducing the participants to contents and pedagogy of a capacity-building curriculum. The usage and adaptation of capacity-building materials were addressed. It also offered a unique opportunity to learn the UNESCO methodology on developing intangible cultural heritage safeguarding plans and to discuss ways for implementing the capacity-building program in Central Asia in the future.

The International Training Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region under the auspices of UNESCO (CRIHAP) in collaboration with the National Commission of the Kyrgyz Republic for UNESCO, generously supported the training workshop.
