When it comes to sustainable development, the topic of intangible cultural heritage—or living heritage—is inadequately discussed despite its connection to gender equality, health, education, economic expansion, environmental preservation, and jobs creation, among others. Living heritage is a source of well-being by ensuring the future resilience for next generations, which can be a factor in sustainable development. To further explore the linkage between the two, the free MOOC on Living Heritage and Sustainable Development is relaunching on 1 September 2023.

This six-week self-paced course equips learners with a fundamental understanding of living heritage, community participation, and safeguarding practices and living heritage’s contribution to sustainable development. Examples and experiences of communities from around the world are also available. The course is designed for various audiences, ranging from practitioners and professionals engaged in living heritage safeguarding, key actors engaged in the field of sustainable development, graduate students and advanced undergraduate students, and others interested in living heritage.

This MOOC was developed by UNESCO in collaboration with the International Information and Networking Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region under the auspices of UNESCO (ICHCAP), the SDG Academy, and the National Autonomous University of Mexico—UNESCO Chair for Research on Intangible Cultural Heritage and Cultural Diversity (UNAM). This course on Living Heritage and Sustainable Development is among many of our endeavors to raise awareness and share information on living heritage drawn from long-established expertise of multidiscipline scholars and stakeholders.

In 2023, to mark the twentieth anniversary of the UNESCO 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, Spanish and Korean video transcripts have been added to the course to ensure inclusive learning on the topic of living heritage. We encourage you to enroll the course to not only broaden your comprehension but also discover sustainable solutions to work with your community on living heritage safeguarding. Start now by joining the course here.
