The Fukuoka Prize Committee has given final approval to the laureates selected by the Prize Jury. Professor Khatharya UM, the Academic Prize winner, participated as a speaker at ICHCAP’s third APEN-ICH International Seminar in 2021. Also, the film Gyeongju by the film director Mr. ZHANG Lu, the Arts and Culture Prize winner, was also selected as the J Special: Programmer of the Year of the Jeonju International Film Festival 2023. The laureates for the fiscal year 2023 are as follows:

- Grand Prize: Professor Thongchai WINICHAKUL (Thai | Historian)
- Academic Prize: Professor Khatharya UM (U.S.A. | Political Scientist, Scholar of
    Southeast Asian Studies)
- Arts and Culture Prize: Mr. ZHANG Lu (China | Film director)

The Award Ceremony will be held on Tuesday, September 12, 2023 (JST), series of public lectures will be held between September 13 and 15, 2023 (JST) and all these events will be held with an audience in the venue, and the recording will be available online at a later date. Information on how to apply for these events will be available in a future notification from us. We would be grateful for your participation in these events as well as for sharing the information.

The Fukuoka Prize was established by Fukuoka City, Japan, in 1990 as an annual award to honor the outstanding work of individuals, groups, and organizations in preserving and creating Asia's unique and diverse cultures. The prize aims to foster and increase awareness of the value of Asian cultures and to institute a broad framework for exchange and mutual learning among the people of Asia. This year marks the thirty-third anniversary of the inception of the Fukuoka Prize.

So far, we have had the privilege of presenting the prize to 121 leading figures in their respective fields. Prize laureates include Prof. Muhammad Yunus from Bangladesh, who has also received the Nobel Peace Prize, and Dr. Nakamura Tetsu from Japan, who took the lead in medical services, land reclamation, and social welfare for the sick and vulnerable in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
