ICOM is preparing an issue of Museum International on the theme “Museums and Local Development.” All proposals submitted will be assessed for suitability, and if chosen, the subsequent articles will go through a double-blind peer review. The issue is expected to be published in collaboration with Taylor & Francis/Routledge in December 2019.

ICOM and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) have joined forces to highlight the role museums play in local development. To this end, the two organisations have developed the Guide for Local Governments, Communities and Museums, a road map for local governments, museums, and museum professionals on how to define a local development agenda jointly, which promotes a more sustainable future.

The guide was launched and presented at the OECD conference in Venice in December 2018, where participants from all over the world discussed how culture can be a lever for economic development, the wellbeing of communities, and a collective sustainable future in rural and urban areas.

ICOM would like to open up this issue of Museum International to the broader international museum community by deepening the debate on the role of museums in fostering wellbeing and social sustainability in local communities.

Proposals might broach one or more of the following aspects of local development:
  • health and wellbeing
  • community empowerment
  • social inclusion and cohesion
  • environment and climate change
  • ethical development and economics
  • entrepreneurship and innovation
  • museum management for local development
  • local governments and museum policy

The submission deadline of proposed papers' abstracts is 11 April, 2019. Abstracts between 250 and 300 words, written in English, French or Spanish, should be submitted for selection to publications@icom.museum. The following information should be included with the abstract: Title of the submitted paper, name(s) of author(s), and professional background.

More details of this call for papers is available on the ICOM website.
