The Cheongju Craft Biennale has announced its plan to receive online submissions for the 2019 Cheongju International Craft Competition from 1 May through 31 May 2019.

This competition offers a total of KRW 140,000,000 in prize money to the winners in two competition areas: the Craft Competition, which is identical to the previous competition calling for craft work, and the Craft City Lab Competition, which seeks ideas to secure the diverse directions and perspectives for Cheongju to grow as the craft city.

The Craft Competition does not put any limitations on the theme or genre of the craft works. Entrants may participate as individuals or teams, without any restrictions on age or nationality. Entries will be judged in two stages: first submission evaluation followed by judging of the actual work. Winners will be announced in September next year and will be exhibited at the 2019 Cheongju Craft Biennale.

The Craft City Lab Competition calls for ideas that could develop into a paper focusing on the potential of Cheongju to grow as a craft city. The winners will be announced in June next year, and their work will be documented and published prior to the opening of 2019 Cheongju Craft Biennale.

For more information, refer to the “Notice” section on the Cheongju Craft Biennale official website (www.okcj.org) or contact the staff in charge of the Cheongju International Craft Competition at 043-219-1037.

According to an official from the Cheongju Craft Biennale, “The craft world found it regrettable that the competition, which is deemed an important part of Cheongju Craft Biennale, was not held last year,” adding that “since the competition is an opportunity for both domestic and international craft artists to feature their talents on equal terms with one another, we hope that many artists will participate in next year’s competition.”

The eleventh Cheongju Craft Biennale will be held in fall 2019.
