The Korea Ceramic Foundation has announced that it will call for participation in the international competition to select exhibits for the tenth GICB, from 1 to 31 October. The GICB will be held at Icheon Cerapia in Gyeonggi-do from 27 September to 24 November 2019.

The GICB, which is organized by the Korea Ceramic Foundation, has been held since 2001. The biennale event aims to promote Korea’s unique ceramics culture to the wider world and gather sophisticated ceramic works from other countries. It also provides the platform to review the current status of ceramic arts across the world and issues related to ceramic culture to explore the future direction of ceramic arts through diverse artistic experiments.

The tenth GICB will undergo significant changes, especially for its international competition. It will introduce the works of three hundred or fewer artists selected from the first round of portfolio screening through an online exhibition. The works of forty or fewer artists selected from the second round of screening will be displayed at the offline exhibition. Among such artists, seven will be selected to be awarded a 100 million won cash prize.

The competition invites artists from all parts of the world to submit artistic and practical works made from clay (ceramics) or made with the theme of clay (ceramics). There are two categories, Ceramics as Expression and Ceramics for Use. The first category includes creative artworks such as sculptures, objects, installation works to be displayed indoors, video, sound, performance, or viewer-participating projects. The second category includes creative ceramic works with practical functions or design elements such as tableware, teaware, lighting, accessories, and home decor objects. Ceramic works in the form of a vessel are classified as ceramics for use, even if they were produced as artworks.

Please visit the GICB website for detailed information about the international competition.
