Ethno Cambodia is a project of the Cambodian Living Arts, an NGO focusing on helping the youth and talented people to promote creativity and innovation in the arts sector and building cultural links with neighbors in the Greater Mekong region and further afield in Asia. It is a workshop for young musicians and singers who wish to have an opportunity to learn a variety of traditional and folk music from around the world through exchange and immersion. It will be held for the first time in Siem Reap, Cambodia, in January 2019.

The workshop is expected to gather thirty young musicians from all over the world, specifically from Mekong region countries (Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam) as target areas. The participants will live together for a week, from 7 to 14 January in 2019, learning and sharing different music and cultures with each other. Every participant is a student and a teacher at the same time. Through a combination of workshops, jam sessions, and performances, they will get to know a variety of musical styles, which could inspire new tunes and music of their own.

Applicants must be 18 years old or older, with a working knowledge of spoken English and strong interest in traditional and folk music. They should also be confident to teach their own traditional music to a large group of international musicians. Moreover, it is encouraged that the participants as young musicians are open to learning traditional music from other cultures and to performing together, sharing new knowledge and experiences from Ethno Cambodia with their peers.

Participant fees differ according to nationality. For participants from the Mekong region the fee is USD 150; for those from other countries it is USD 350. These fees will cover local transport within the program, accommodations, and meals. The deadline of application for this workshop is 28 September 2018. Announcement of the successful participants will be made on 5 October 2018. For more information, please visit cambodianlivingarts.org/ethno-cambodia.
