The International Journal of Intangible Heritage was first published in 2006 in response to the states ratifying UNESCO's 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage as well as the growing academic and professional interests in ICH. The journal is dedicated to promoting the understanding of all aspects of ICH and communicating research activities and good practices.
The thirteenth volume of the journal contains thirteen papers out of thirty-seven contributions. The Viewpoints section includes a paper titled “Museums and Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage—Facilitating Participation and Strengthening their Function in Society” by Janet Blake, an associate professor at Shahid Beheshti University in Iran. While ICH has been preserved and protected based on universal and global values, ICH concerning knowledge and skills, in particular, is also inseparable from local communities. Professor Blake argues that we should expand our view on ICH to local communities, and museums should take the lead in preserving ICH. Among the main papers is “Why is she Naked? An Iterative Refinement of the Digitisation of ICH with the OvaHimba Tribe in Namibia” by Professor Kasper Rodil at Aalborg University in Denmark and Professor Heike Winschiers-Theophilus at Namibia University of Science and Technology in Namibia. They highlight the discourse on the digitization of ICH.
The International Journal of Intangible Heritage can be downloaded in Korean or English as a .pdf file on the journal website. Print copies of the journal will be distributed to major libraries, museums, and university libraries as well as international organizations including ICOM and UNESCO.
The journal accepts blind submissions at any time throughout the year. Contributions for the fourteenth volume, which is scheduled to be published in 2019, will be accepted until 28 December 2018. For more details, visit the contribution page.
