The International Congress on Cultural Mapping: Linking Heritage (Tangible and Intangible) and Creative Tourism will be held from 29 to 30 November 2018 at Colégio do Espírito Santo of the University of Evora in Portugal.

Organized by the Interdisciplinary Centre for History, Culture and Societies (CIDEHUS) at the University of Évora and UNESCO, the international congress aims to provide a better understanding of how cultural mapping can propose actions that enhance the awareness of cultural identities; debate its implications for local development, community engagement, and policy making, including sustainable and creative tourism practices; and foster debate over its long-term results. It also endorses the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 and the goals of the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The international congress will be two days. One day is for exploring the challenges of mapping ICH through conventional and alternative approaches. Besides a better dissemination of information resources available through online databases around intangible heritage: what is their impact? Who is using them, how, and for what purposes? Are they an end in itself or are they catalyzing other initiatives? The other day is for examining the use of cultural mapping in tourism planning. The aim is to discuss the present state of cultural mapping and its role in tourism development and heritage management practices. ​

For registration, the deadline is 15 October 2018. All interested academics, researchers, PhD students, and practitioners are invited to submit proposals (papers or posters) in Portuguese or English. Submission deadline is 15 July 2018. Two main approaches are preferably suggested; ‘Mapping intangible heritage on the web’ and ‘Using cultural mapping in tourism planning.’ For details regarding submission guidelines, please visit the official website of the international congress.
