To mark the tenth anniversary of George Town’s listing as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Annual George Town Heritage Celebrations will be held at the George Town World Heritage Site on 7 July 2018. The celebration is organized by George Town World Heritage Incorporated with the endorsement of the Penang government and in cooperation with the Penang Island City Council, Penang Global Tourism, and Malaysian National Commission for UNESCO.

Themed POTENTIAL—Of the Past, In the Present, For the Future, this year’s celebrations explore George Town’s potential in moving forward based on its past narratives and current experiences. POTENTIAL also contains the word “ten,” representing the tenth anniversary.

The celebrations will feature the Street Festival on 7 July 2018 from 6 pm to 11 pm in the George Town World Heritage Site where more than twenty local communities will showcase their culture and traditions through a variety of programs and performances—creating a platform for the communities to open up their hearts and culture to the public, who are given the opportunity to immerse themselves in George Town’s diverse cultural heritage and understand its outstanding universal value.

There will also be site excursions to eight places of worship in George Town on weekends in July 2018. In the site excursions, visitors will visit St. George’s Church, Church of the Assumption, Kapitan Keling Mosque, Kramat Dato Koyah, Nattukotai Chettiar Temple, Police Gurdwara Sahib Penang, Acheen Street Malay Mosque, and Thai Pak Koong Temple. And at the community-led workshops, visitors will have a chance to learn about crafts from an artisan or taste a recipe passed down through generations. Opera lovers are also in for a treat with the staging of Taiwanese opera performances by the world-renowned, award-winning Tang Mei Yun Taiwanese Opera Company. The troupe will perform at the Khoo Kongsi on 7 July 2018 and Majestic Theatre on 8 and 9 July 2018.
