The second UCLG Culture Summit will be held in Jeju from 10 to 13 May by the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), and will be hosted by the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province. The summit will take place in the Jeju Arts and Culture Center with the title of “Commitments and Actions for Culture in Sustainable Cities.” The organizer and host expect about a thousand participants from around the world, including local governments, international organizations, cultural experts and artists.

The summit will begin with the keynote speeches by Ko Un, a respected Korean poet and nominee for the Nobel Prize in Literature, and Karima Bennoune, UN Special Rapporteur in the field of cultural rights. During the thirty-three sessions that follow, cultural experts, social activists, and policymakers from around the world will have discussions on culture as a major element for making sustainable cities. The plenary sessions will address the topics of “Implementing Culture 21 Actions,” “Towards a Global Culture 2030 Goal,” and “Culture Rights and Local Alliance for Culture.” There also will be a presentation titled “Culture Urban Future”, which is a UNESCO global report on culture for sustainable urban development. During the parallel sessions of the summit, participants will discuss social actions in the community through arts and culture and processes for developing a multi-NGO platform, among other topics. They will also have the chance to visit cultural sites and join experience activities to learn how traditional culture and arts coexist with the present and enjoy cultural and natural heritage of Jeju City.

The UCLG Culture Summit is a gathering of UCLG members and non-members who meet to better understand the roles of culture in sustainable social development and exchange information and opinions. This year’s summit is an extension to the first UCLG Culture Summit held in Bilbao, Spain, in 2015 with the title of “Culture and Sustainable Cities.”

Public registration for the upcoming summit will be accepted, and the registration fee will be waived for residents of Jeju City. For registration and inquiries, visit the websiteor contact info@uclg-culturesummit2017.org.
